About Laguna Verde Natural Reserve

Laguna Verde Natural Reserve is located in the Atacama Desert region of northern Chile, close to the Chilean-Argentinian border. Positioned at approximately 4,350 meters (14,270 feet) above sea level, the reserve surrounds Laguna Verde, a striking green salt lake whose vibrant turquoise and emerald hues are caused by mineral-rich waters and high altitude reflections. The reserve lies within the Andean volcanic chain and features dramatic volcanic peaks, including the imposing Licancabur Volcano nearby. Ecologically, the area supports specialized high-altitude flora and fauna adapted to its harsh environment, including various species of flamingos, vicuñas, Andean foxes, and cactus desert plants. The natural reserve is an important habitat for migratory birds and native wildlife, making it a hotspot for wildlife viewing. Historically, the area was significant for indigenous Atacameño and other Andean cultures, who revered the lake and surrounding peaks. Today, visitors are drawn to Laguna Verde for trekking, wildlife observation, photography, and cultural immersion. Hiking trails circle part of the lake and allow exploration of volcanic formations, salt flats, and natural hot springs. The reserve’s solitude, dramatic colors, and rare ecosystem appeal to outdoor enthusiasts seeking remote and unique landscapes. Access to the area is typically via the nearby town of San Pedro de Atacama, a gateway to the broader Atacama Desert and the reserve itself. Laguna Verde Natural Reserve offers a captivating combination of scenic beauty, wildlife diversity, and geological wonders, making it a cherished destination for nature lovers and adventure travelers.
